Flash Flood Warning issued September 13 at 7:42AM EDT until September 13 at 9:30AM EDT by NWS Upton NY At 742 AM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that heavy rain was falling across the warned area. Between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Heavy rain producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Paterson, Passaic, Wayne, Bloomfield, Orange, Paramus, Lyndhurst, Rutherford, Caldwell, Kearny, Hawthorne, Fairfield, Clifton, East Orange, West Orange, Montclair, Belleville, Fair Lawn, Garfield and Livingston. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots. If you are in a basement, be prepared to move to a higher floor.

Average rainfall amounts are forecast to range from 1 to 2 inches. Locally higher amounts up to around 3 inches possible. Overflowing poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 759 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected over the area.
