Red Flag Warning issued September 11 at 10:18AM PDT until September 13 at 2:00AM PDT by NWS Reno NV The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from 11 AM Saturday to 2 AM PDT Sunday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. * CHANGES...The Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning. Expiration time extended to 2 AM Sunday. * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 420 Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and Far Southern Lassen Counties, Fire Weather Zone 421 Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties. * Winds...Southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind prone locations along US-395 may gust up to 65 mph. * Humidity...As low as 12 percent. * Duration...3 to 6 hours. * Impacts...The combination of strong winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. For the Wind Advisory, southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind prone areas along I-580, US-395, and the eastern slopes of the Carson Range may gust up to 55 to 65 mph. * WHERE...For the Lake Wind Advisory, Washoe Lake. For the Wind Advisory, the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area. * WHEN...For the Lake Wind Advisory, from 2 PM this afternoon to 8 PM PDT this evening. For the Wind Advisory, from 11 AM Saturday to 2 AM PDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds will increase Saturday morning and afternoon, with the strongest winds expected Saturday evening. Winds will very slowly decrease late Saturday night into early Sunday morning behind the cold front. Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage. Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.
