Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued June 20 at 6:58PM CDT until June 20 at 7:30PM CDT by NWS Goodland KS At 655 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Rexford to 9 miles south of Gem to 9 miles southeast of Brewster, moving south at 20 mph. THESE ARE DESTRUCTIVE STORMS FOR THOMAS AND SHERIDAN COUNTIES. HAZARD...90 mph wind gusts and tennis ball size hail. SOURCE...NSSL report of 91 MPH winds at 6:35 PM near Rexford and Emergency Manager report of 80-90 MPH winds in Colby. IMPACT...You are in a life-threatening situation. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be heavily damaged or destroyed. Homes and businesses will have substantial roof and window damage. Expect extensive tree damage and power outages. These severe storms will be near... Menlo around 700 PM CDT. Oakley around 720 PM CDT. Other locations impacted by these severe thunderstorms include Angelus, Mingo, Halford, and Seguin. This includes Interstate 70 in Kansas between mile markers 36 and 74. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 1000 PM CDT for northwestern and west central Kansas. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. These thunderstorms will produce strong winds resulting in areas of near zero visibility in blowing dirt. Use extreme caution if you must travel and be alert for rapidly changing visibility. Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Blowing Dust Warning issued June 20 at 5:53PM CDT until June 20 at 8:00PM CDT by NWS Goodland KS * WHAT...Narrow corridor of near zero visibilities in the blowing dust. * WHERE...Cheyenne KS, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas, Logan, and Wallace Counties. * WHEN...Until 8 PM CDT /7 PM MDT/ this evening. * IMPACTS...Severely limited visibilities are expected. Travel will be dangerous and possibly life-threatening. Poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems. Blowing dust can significantly lower air quality and it is encouraged that you take preventative measures such as staying indoors or wearing protective breathing masks if outside. High dust concentrations can cause respiratory problems, decrease lung activity, aggravate asthma, and lead to potential heart-related problems, especially with children, elderly or those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Be ready for a sudden drop in visibility to near zero. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep foot off the brake pedal. Remember, 'Pull Aside, Stay Alive'.

Flood Advisory issued June 20 at 6:45PM CDT until June 20 at 10:00PM CDT by NWS Goodland KS * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of northwest Kansas, including the following counties, Decatur, Rawlins, Sheridan and Thomas. * WHEN...Until 1000 PM CDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 645 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Colby, Hoxie, Rexford, Selden, Gem, Menlo, Dresden, Halford, Seguin and Leoville. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely.
