Air Quality Alert issued July 18 at 7:05AM EDT by NWS Charleston WV West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection - Air Quality Division has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for Fine Particulates for West Virgina until midnight EDT tonight. Elevated fine particulate matter levels are anticipated to drop as the day goes on today. A code Orange air quality alert means members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is less likely to be affected, but sensitive groups should take additional precautions. These groups include children, the elderly, and people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding outdoor exercise or strenuous activity. Check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency`s www.AirNow.gov website for current air monitor readings.

Special Weather Statement issued July 18 at 5:31PM EDT by NWS Charleston WV At 531 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 6 miles northeast of Buffalo to near Letitia. Movement was south at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Ashland, Portsmouth, Ironton, Winfield, Coal Grove, Lake Vesuvius, Eleanor, Buffalo, Greenup, South Shore, Greenbo Lake, Load, Letitia, Franklin Furnace, Flatwoods, Russell, Vernon, Waterloo, Raceland, and Worthington. This includes Interstate 77 in West Virginia between mile markers 118 and 124. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
