The Northwestern City of Chesapeake in southeastern Virginia... The Southwestern City of Norfolk in southeastern Virginia... The City of Portsmouth in southeastern Virginia... The Northeastern City of Suffolk in southeastern Virginia... * Until 530 PM EDT. * At 223 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 2 to 4 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Churchland, Deep Creek, Downtown Portsmouth, Old Dominion University, Downtown Norfolk, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Bowers Hill, Western Branch, Cradock, Driver, Ghent, Deanes, Huntersville, South Norfolk, Wilroy and Portlock. Coastal Flood Advisory issued September 22 at 6:28AM EDT until September 23 at 2:00PM EDT by NWS Wakefield VA * WHAT...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. For the Coastal Flood Watch, one to three feet of inundation above ground level possible in low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. * WHERE...Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Poquoson, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. * WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, from 4 PM this afternoon to 2 PM EDT Wednesday. For the Coastal Flood Watch, from Wednesday afternoon through late Thursday night. * IMPACTS...Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
