Heat Advisory issued September 19 at 12:49PM CDT until September 19 at 8:00PM CDT by NWS Birmingham AL * WHAT...Heat index values up to 106 expected. * WHERE...Much of Central Alabama. * WHEN...Until 8 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

Special Weather Statement issued September 19 at 3:03PM CDT by NWS Birmingham AL At 303 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Splash Adventure to near Helena. Movement was south at 10 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Alabaster, Bessemer, Helena, Splash Adventure, Maylene, McCalla, Siluria, Promenade Tannehill, Bessemer Airport, Lake Cyrus, Bent Brook Golf Club, and McAdory. This includes the following highways... Interstate 459 between mile markers 1 and 8. Interstate 59 between mile markers 105 and 111. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
