Flash Flood Warning issued September 23 at 2:39AM EDT until September 23 at 5:45AM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC At 239 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Village, Chimney Rock State Park, Bat Cave and Gerton. Rutherford County Emergency Management has activated their flash flood warning sirens for the Falls Creek area just north of Chimney Rock. Residents and visitors impacted are strongly encouraged to move away from the river and seek higher ground immediately. If you are staying near the Rocky Broad River in the Chimney Rock/Lake Lure area please maintain situational awareness and closely monitor weather conditions and water levels. Conditions can change rapidly and water levels may rise with little warning. Please continue to monitor trusted weather sources, local emergency notifications, and official Rutherford County Emergency Management updates for addition information. Rutherford County Emergency Management reported water over the roadway at times on Main Street in Chimney Rock as well as flood waters beginning to cross the temporary road north of Chimney Rock in the Falls Creek area. Flood stage has dropped to 6.78 feet at the Rocky Broad River near Bat Cave. Some campgrounds below Bat Cave in Rutherford County near Lake Lure may be evacuated as a precaution. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
