Fire Weather Watch issued September 10 at 11:42AM PDT until September 13 at 12:00AM PDT by NWS Reno NV The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for strong winds and low humidity, which is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening. * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 420 Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and Far Southern Lassen Counties, Fire Weather Zone 421 Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties. * Winds...Southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Wind prone locations along US-395 may gust to 55 to 65 mph. * Humidity...As low as 13 percent. * Duration...3 to 6 hours. * Impacts...The combination of strong winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. For the High Wind Watch, southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind prone areas along I-580, US-395, and the eastern slopes of the Carson Range may gust up to 60 to 70 mph. * WHERE...For the Lake Wind Advisory, Washoe Lake. For the High Wind Watch, the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area. * WHEN...For the Lake Wind Advisory, from 2 PM to 8 PM PDT Friday. For the High Wind Watch, from Saturday morning through late Saturday night. * IMPACTS...Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds will increase Saturday through the morning and afternoon hours, with the strongest winds expected Saturday evening. Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage. Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.
